Of the five roles described in Ephesians 4, the prophet is the one with which many of us are least familiar and have the most questions. And yet, we believe that God still speaks today. We believe that he can and does speak to his children – many of us have experience of this. So why do we experience a gap?
Here are a variety of resources which we hope will bring clarity and confidence in this area of ministry.
Neil Dougall’s article “Prophetic Leadership: What Is It and Does It Matter?” was first published in the Journal of Religious Leadership in 2020. Both the journal and Neil have very generously given permission for it to be available here.
Accessible Prophecy has been equipping the church for many years. They seek to help ordinary believers recognise and hear God’s voice as well as those with prophetic gifting take hold of their gift in a way which grows the church.
There are lots of resources available. Here’s where we recommend you begin:
Why We Love Prophecy, Part One, a short reflection on what the prophetic can do for each of us – helpful if it is not currently part of your culture.
Theological Roots of the Prophetic, a thought provoking exploration, where we find the prophetic rooted in the character of God.
Going Slow, a reminder to pay attention.
My Sheep Have Ears Cath Livesey’s book which leads us into a deeper and more accessible comprehension of how God speaks to us.
John Mark Comer of Portland, Oregon spoke at the 2020 24/7 Prayer Gathering of what he can see God doing in this season – a stirring of prophetic gifting, insight and creativity. Watch the talk on YouTube.
