About this event

Pioneering Parishes Values Day

Discover who your congregation aspires to be for God and your local community.

Thriving congregations tend to be rooted in ongoing conversations about what kind of people they want to be for God in their local area. But those conversations can be difficult to start and navigate. This online training day will give you the tools to ask the right questions, identify values and adopt them, along with indicators, as a congregation.

Who’s it for?

This training day is specifically for church leaders (clergy, lay ministers, and parish church council members or elders). The training is designed for church leadership teams to learn together and develop a process for developing values and indicators within their congregations. It’s ideal for those who have completed our First Steps training course but most churches will benefit from the day.

What can I expect?

Developing Values and Indicators has been the most requested topic for additional Pioneering Parishes training. This day will cover the theory but most importantly how you can put it into practice. There will be expert speakers, case studies, break out rooms for discussion and plenty of room for thought.

What content will be covered?

When you finish the training day, you will have:

• Explored the purpose and practical principles of developing church values and indicators

• Considered various frameworks for developing church values

• Identified the strengths and limitations of these frameworks within your context

• Designed an appropriate process for developing and agreeing values and indicators within your church.

Led by?

Rev Greg Bakker

Greg was until recently the pioneer development officer for the Diocese of Portsmouth. As an experienced parish priest of 30 years and thought leader in the skill of advocating for pioneers, he is committed to creating space for both pioneers and parish churches to thrive in the work of developing new Christian communities. Greg has led a parish church based on values and indicators so has plenty of experience and wisdom to share.

Paul Docherty

An experienced consultant who has led values/indicator processes in public services departments and in church contexts.

Rev Tina Hodgett

Tina is a pioneer, teacher, speaker and leader with a reputation for inspiring hope and a sense of possibility in congregations. She co-authored the pioneer spectrum and birthed the Pioneer Project in the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Tina has contributed chapters to three books on mission including one called ‘Co-creating churches playfully’ published in ‘New Churches: a Theology’ and another called ‘Being pilgrim into the unknown’ to be published next year. She takes Eucharistic services once a month at the church of St Michael’s and All Angels near her home in Yeovil.

When is it? Saturday, 29 March from 10.00 – 4.00 pm

Where is it? Takes place via Zoom.

How much does it cost?

We would hate cost to be a barrier to anyone attending so we charge just £10 for the day.

If you bring a team, the maximum your church will pay is for three spaces (£30), any additional participants are free. After we receive notification of a group booking we will email you a Booking Form, which enables us to ensure all attendees receive the relevant communications about the event. This form must be returned 1 week prior to the start date.

The real cost for the facilitation and materials is much higher, so if you feel able to contribute a little more you will be helping to support the continuing work of Pioneering Parishes.

Ticket sales close: 20 March 2025 (Group bookings 18 March 2025)

Previous participants’ comments:

“We started the session having no idea how to take a church through a values-setting process, and ended with a plan!

It was amazing!

The day gave me the language to communicate the process to others too.”

Fran, Lay Leader

“Those who attended the October 2024 Values Day, saw it as inspirational, practical and motivating.”

Children and Families Ministry Leader, St Peter’s Wolvercote, Oxford
