LITURGY & PRAYER IN CHRISTIAN WORSHIP

​14th January to 25th March, 2026

​This course will take place in-person (with an online option) on Wednesdays at 4.00pm-6.00pm. This course will be taught over 9 weeks (including a one-week break) via meetings & instruction and after class activities.

​Introduction to the course

​This course will aim to:

• Extend student competence in the production of worship materials including spoken liturgies, prayer and rituals. 

• Explore the significance of worship and ritual in relation to the human life cycle.

• Examine resources which are helpful in the construction of Christian worship.

• Support the development of writing and presentation skills through active practice.

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

• Identify key principles used in the writing and delivery of spoken liturgy and prayer.

• Critically review liturgical material and rituals used for a significant events in the human life cycle.

• Employ a variety of web and text-based supports for constructing worship materials.

• Evaluate their own materials and practice as a worship leader and support the work of colleagues.

Course information​​

This course is conducted in person at the University of Glasgow. ​Each learning module will be taught through a range of presentations, discussion, exercises, viewing and reading. Each week participants will be introduced to a range of materials, including video, articles, and resources for use or adapting to local worship contexts. Learning materials and interaction will be accessible using the learning platform Moodle. 

Learners may choose to undertake assessments, and thus qualify for 10 credit points towards a Higher Education certificate or Glasgow University approved theology programme, or may engage with the learning programme for their own personal benefit without the final assessments. 

If you take the course for credit, the formal assessment for this course consists of the following:

• An essay on liturgy and the human life cycle of 1000 words. (40%)

• A self-evaluation of a class delivered original liturgy incorporating appraisal and feedback. (60%)
