Many drivers are familiar with the need to ensure that when a car is over 3-years old, there is a need to have an annual MOT. It serves as a safety check, a time when the owner can gain some comfort in knowing that their vehicle is in a satisfactory state and safe for the road. At least for another year!

While it is not a direct comparison, it does serve as useful analogy for the role of an MDC in the life of those in ministry. Unlike the MOT, the MDC or Ministry Discernment Conversation is not compulsory. It is entirely voluntary, for those serving as Readers, Deacons, OLM and FTWAS to undertake, as and when they feel it would benefit them.

Essentially it is a space! A space of time which someone would set apart to invest in their own wellbeing. Usually lasting up to about 3 hours, it is a guided conversation, which is not an assessment of ministry, but a space that allows someone to unpack who they are, and where they are within the present phase of their ministry.

This space is facilitated by someone who knows and understands the challenges of life for those who seek to serve others in the name of God. Crucially it is also a confidential space, with no written report or feedback of any description going back to a Presbytery or national committee. It gives time to unpack life and busyness, challenges and anxieties, and helps the person undertaking an MDC to work through priorities for the future.

It may be that you are thinking about undertaking study leave, changing role or taking on a new commitment. What would that be like? What do you need to think about? What will you then let go of to allow you to do this? Do you need a holiday? The questions that arise are for you to answer – no one will dictate answers, but will bring these questions that are already swirling around within you out from within and allow you to answer them for yourself in a safe space.

So, check out our MDC facilitators on this link and plan that time and space that is just for you.
