Nearly 300 local Church of Scotland congregations partner with the Boys’ Brigade and Boys’ Brigade with Girls Association groups as outreach and mission resources to engage with local communities. For many, this long-standing relationship has resulted in the wider church gaining members, office-bearers, and, in some cases, Ministers!
For churches who have only recently started a BB group, it marks the beginning of a promising partnership for the long term. Advancing Christ’s Kingdom remains central to our mission, now complemented by the concept of Living Life to the Full (John 10:10).
Our BB Faith Journey model acknowledges the uniqueness of each child and young person, providing a supportive framework within our partner congregations. This model allows young people to explore biblical teachings, encounter Jesus, and expand His Kingdom by embracing God’s plans for them.
Our broader programme resources promote Personal Growth and Faith Development. Getting into the Bible is one of six programme categories. The others, Getting Active, Adventurous, Learning & Creating, and involvement in our communities, church, and the wider area, complete an informal educative resource that helps to develop Spiritual, Mental and Physical health. Our activities include indoor and outdoor games, messy and not-so-messy challenges, sports, residentials, and opportunities to develop life skills, teamwork, communication, and lasting friendships.
This partnership provides an opportunity to engage with extended families, reaching over 10,000 family groups across Scotland through the BB/congregational collaboration. It strengthens relationships on multiple levels, with intergenerational work where experienced volunteer leaders and members of congregations mentor and support children, young people and young leaders, fostering mutual respect and a connected faith community. For young people, particularly those undertaking advanced awards such as The King’s Badge – the highest award in the BB, many churches offer opportunities to undertake volunteering elements that young people complete to gain the award, which benefits both parties.
Over the years, the Church of Scotland and BB have collaborated on charitable projects, social action campaigns, and youth outreach at both national and local levels, promoting collective responsibility and service. A positive partnership between Boys’ Brigade groups and Church of Scotland congregations serves as a powerful resource for faith, youth development, and community service. By fostering holistic and intergenerational relationships, they inspire children and young people to contribute to their communities with faith, service, and leadership, ensuring they thrive and Live Life to the Full.
