Rev Neil Dougall, Parish Minister of St Andrew Blackadder Church in North Berwick is seeking your help with his survey on Leadership Development. Neil served as Convener of the Church’s Ministries Council from 2011-2015 and during that time often found himself thinking and talking about leadership, and particularly how this related to Parish Ministers.
Since finishing as Convener, Neil has pursued a Doctor in Ministry degree being offered by Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and the University of Edinburgh with his doctoral research on Parish Ministry and leadership.

Neil says:

Leadership in the church and the role of Parish Ministers are huge topics. One thing I have learnt is that, in order to get useful answers, research questions need to be specific. So rather than looking at leadership or Parish Ministry in general I am asking a specific question:

How prepared are Church of Scotland Parish Ministers for the leadership role that the General Assembly expects them to play?

I have discovered that there are plenty of anecdotes on this matter but no hard data!

I expect this survey to provide that data. This will allow the Church to discuss the matter and address the issues identified. As this feeds into a much wider area that the Ministries Council is responsible for they have decided to support my research and I am very grateful for this. I want to stress, however, that I am responsible for the research question and the shape of the survey.

I am convinced that this is a vital question both for the health of the Church and the welfare of Parish Ministers. I estimate that the survey will take about 10 minutes to complete. Thank you in advance for giving a small portion of your time to do so, which will, in time, I believe, be of benefit to all of us who serve as Parish Ministers.
